Anil Kumar Gupta is a sustainability - risk management strategist working in the area of disaster management, environment and climate resilience for more than 25 years with national, sub-national and business administrations. He steered international and national projects of policy research - planning and capacity building and established new approaches, viz. ecoDRR, CCA-DRR integrated mainstreaming, Loss & Damage focused Climate Risk Management Framework, Industrial, Urban, Business continuity resilience and Tools like DIA (with EIA/SEA, Auditing), Mitigation analysis, PDNA, etc. He has credit for preparation of National and Sectoral Disaster Management Plans, Human resource capacity development Plans, National action plan for chemical disaster management, National drought manual, institutional expansion & strengthening plan and guided related sub-national planning, climate actions, SDG implementation and pilots. He implemented programmes for officials of African and Asia-Pacific nations and policy dialogues in cooperation with UN agencies, CDKN, GIZ, IUCN, ISET, OPML, ADPC, etc. besides India/region. He was member of Government / Ministerial delegations abroad, contributed to international policy processes including Bangkok Declaration, HFA-2/SFDRR, etc. He has published several books, process guidance/manuals, chapters and policy/research papers. He contributed to several EIAs, Risk/Vulnerability studies, Impact & Need analysis, and taught at Master’s degree programmes, supervised doctoral treatise and developed innovative courses, e-learning/blended & self-study programmes. He is currently full Professor and Head of India’s National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) Division of Environment and Disaster Risk Management. He is Programme Director of the Centre for Excellence on Climate Resilience and implementing projects, viz. CAP-RES (with Department of Science & Technology, under National Knowledge Mission on Climate Change), National Agriculture Disaster Management Plan (with Ministry of Agriculture & Farmer’s Welfare), Health Resilience and Capacity Building – National Health Adaptation Plan (with WHO and Ministry of Health), Crisis Management Plan to deal with Contamination of Water Bodies, and Disaster Management Plan of the Ministry (with Central Pollution Control Board & the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change). He is Nodal Officer for International Cooperation, coordination with Central Ministries, UNCCD, UNFCCC and the National Book on Disaster Management. He is Expert Team Member of WMO Climate Statement, South Asia Core-Group Member of IUCN-CEM, and Vice-chairman - Association of Occupational & Environmental Health. He is principal editor of the Springer-Nature Book series on Disaster Resilience and Green Growth, and in the board of research journals. With education and training in environmental science, law, project / training management, climate change and risk management, he attained interdisciplinary expertise. He was recipient of National Science Day Young Scientist Award in Forestry & Environment in 1996, Excellence Award by Society of Environmental & Occupational Health, and offered IDRC Canada’s Thank Tank Initiative Senior Fellowship 2011 for policy research. He is elected fellow of Earth Scientist’s Society. He was founder Faculty, Head & Director (Acting) of the Institute of Environment and Development Studies at the Bundelkhand University, before joining NIDM in 2006. He worked with Government, CSIR, Universities, Corporate and NGOs in professional and administrative capacities.
