About the Expert: Alark Saxena is the Program Director of Yale Himalaya Initiative and a lecturer at the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. Alark is a social-ecologist, a complex system scientist and a systems modeler. His primary interests are in disaster risk reduction, climate change resilience, sustainable forest management and poverty alleviation. Alark is interested in mainstreaming climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction in the development processes of poor communities across the world. He is currently focused on developing techniques for evaluating resilience to shocks and stressors particularly in developing countries. Alark is also interested in forest biometrics and is currently working on developing integrated landscape and livelihood models for forest landscapes in India and Turkey. In the Himalayas, Alark’s work is focused on developing indicators for trans-boundary flood resilience between Nepal and India. He is also working on understanding the impact of tourism on the local natural resources, culture and livelihoods in the Sagarmatha National Park in Nepal. Alark is also engaged in developing research projects on disaster risk reduction in flood hit Uttarakhand Region of India. Recently, Alark’s research group developed an landslide hazard map for Nepal post the 2015 earthquake. Prior to his current position, Alark directed the Disaster Risk Reduction Initiative at the Yale Global Institute of Sustainable Forestry. Alark graduated from the Indian Institute of Forest Management and worked with the MP Forest Department in India. He was responsible for developing a number of alternative livelihood projects for forest dependent communities in central India. At present- Alark is on a visiting fellowship to Aarhus University in Denmark where he is working with an interdisciplinary research group focused on the Anthropocene. Alark is also an International Martial Arts Champion. He professionally bred Dobermans. He loves riding motorcycles and is currently finishing up his Private Pilot license from Yale Aviation which is the oldest aviation club in United States. In the quite time, Alark loves to practice yoga and meditation.
